The real benefit of exercise is what happens as your body responds to exercise. Or in other words, what state the exercise leaves you in. Is it a fat-burning, muscle-building state, a fat storing, muscle breakdown state, or no particularly new state at all?
A Fat-burning State is the Goal
Let’s hear what Dr. Ben Lerner, New York Times best-selling author, Olympic trainer, and founder of the 12 Minute Makeover has to say about the impact of high-intensity exercise on the body:
Ben: Let’s talk about what is it then that this kind of workout can do for you versus, the long workout, the low intensity, long workout. First of all, we know that when you’re done with a surge, testosterone increases. When you’re done with the long workout, testosterone lowers, along with a decrease in growth hormone.
Testosterone and growth hormone are the two hormones that cause you to burn muscle and burn fat. You don’t want those two hormones lowered when you’re done exercising; you want them raised so that you can get all the benefits of the exercise.
When we do the short bursts, the surges, those hormones go up in our system. So that’s the first key benefit. When I’m done exercising as I walk around throughout the rest of the day, or go to bed, or whatever I’m going to do, those hormones are at higher levels in my body. You have those hormones higher in your body so that…your body, literally while resting or just walking around, is getting more ripped and leaner as a result of your exercise.
Why the 12 Minute Makeover Matters
Just losing weight isn’t enough. Losing weight makes you lighter—but not healthier. Weight loss MUST include exercise, or you can be thin on the outside, but fat on the inside, with fat attached to your organs and abdomen.
Exercise decreases LDL (bad) cholesterol, and increases HDL (good) cholesterol. While exercising positively affects cholesterol levels, it also enhances and balances hormone production, while eliminating toxins.
Here’s Dr. Ben Lerner again:
Ben: There isn’t a single disease out there that isn’t being treated on a mass level today that doesn’t have a direct link to a lack of exercise. In fact, the key problem that we face, particularly in America today, is depression and anxiety. 60% of Americans report being depressed. Half of them are on medications for depression, the most dangerous medication being made today, anti-depressants. And yet anytime you compare, in any study, exercise to anti-depressants, anti-depressants are outperformed by exercise. And so it’s that powerful.
It’s safe to say that it’s the lack of movement, the lack of exercise that really creates so much of the disease and the depression that we’re facing, just due to bad function.
