Elderly Women with ‘Dowager’s Hump’ May Be At Higher Risk of Earlier Death

Hyperkyphosis, or “dowager’s hump” the exaggerated forward curvature of the upper spine seen commonly in elderly women may predict earlier death in women whether or not they have vertebral osteoporosis, UCLA researchers have found.

In a study published in the May 19 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers found that older white women with both vertebral fractures and the increased spinal curvature that results in the bent-over posture characteristic of hyperkyphosis had an elevated risk for earlier death. The finding was independent of other factors that included age and underlying spinal osteoporosis.

Women who had only hyperkyphosis, without vertebral fractures, did not show an increased risk for premature death.

Hyperkyphosis can be caused by a number of factors besides osteoporosis, including habitual poor posture and degenerative diseases of the muscles and intervertebral discs.

“Just being bent forward may be an important clinical finding that should serve as a trigger to seek medical evaluation for possible spinal osteoporosis, as vertebral fractures more often than not are a silent disease,” said Dr. Deborah Kado, an associate professor of orthopedic surgery and medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the study’s primary investigator. “We demonstrated that having this age-related postural change is not a good thing. It could mean you’re likely to die sooner.”

For the study, the researchers reviewed data on 610 women, age 67 to 93, from a cohort of 9,704 participants in the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures. The participants were recruited between 1986 and 1988 in Baltimore, Md.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Portland, Ore.; and Pennsylvania’s Monongahela Valley. Researchers measured spinal curvature with a flexicurve and assessed vertebral fractures from spinal radiographs; they assessed mortality based on follow-ups averaging 13.5 years.

Adjusting for age, as well as osteoporosis-related factors such as low bone density, moderate and severe vertebral fractures, and the number of prevalent vertebral fractures, the researchers found that women with previous vertebral fractures and increasing degrees of spinal curvature were at increased mortality risk from the spinal condition, regardless of age, smoking, spinal bone-mineral density, or the number and severity of their spinal fractures.

These study findings provide evidence that it is not just vertebral fracture alone but the associated increased spinal curvature that may be most predictive of adverse health outcomes. Other studies linking hyperkyphosis to poor health, such as impaired physical function, increased fall risk, fractures and mortality, have been unable to exclude the possibility that vertebral fractures alone were the underlying explanation for the findings.

The researchers note several caveats. This study focused on women, though hyperkyphosis also affects men; measurements for vertebral fractures were based only on height ratios, which could lead to misclassification of other causes of height ratio decreases, such as Scheuermann disease; and the timing of the assessments could have affected the results, though it’s unlikely to have made much difference.

However, this study demonstrates a possible association between hyperkyphosis and increased risk for earlier death independent of the number and severity of vertebral fractures or osteoporosis in older women, the researchers write.

“These results add to the growing literature that suggests that hyperkyphosis is a clinically important finding. Because it is readily observed and is associated with ill health in older persons, hyperkyphosis should be recognized as a geriatric syndrome a ‘multifactorial health condition that occurs when the accumulated effect of impairments in multiple systems renders a person vulnerable to situational challenges.’”

Your Chiropractor Could be Your Newest Antioxidant

 

Most people associate chiropractors with pain management, but the practice of chiropractic truly operates on the premise that the work removes blockages to the body’s natural health and healing abilities. This includes removing pressure from nerves that relay signals from the brain to the organs and systems of the body.

 

In 2005, a landmark study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation (JVSR) found evidence that chiropractic care can reduce oxidative stress in the body.

 

Oxidative stress is the damage that occurs when free radicals outnumber the body’s antioxidants. Oxidative stress damages all body cell components: proteins, lipids and DNA.

 

Oxidative stress plays a role in a whole host of diseases and disorders: Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis and many others.

 

Thiols are compounds in the body that act as antioxidants, reacting with free radicals to neutralize them. Serum levels of thiols reflect DNA’s capacity to repair itself, report scientists of Biomedical Diagnostic Research, Inc, and can be used to measure aging and disease status.

 

In a 2003 study published in the Journal of Anti Aging Medicine, the scientists found low serum thiol levels in people with nine different categories of human disease and disorder.

 

The study published in JVSR consisted of 76 participants: one group received short-term chiropractic care; a second group received long-term chiropractic care; and the third group received no chiropractic care.

 

After qualifying for age, sex and the use of nutritional supplements, the participants that received chiropractic care for 2 or more years that were healthy had higher serum thiol levels than those with disease. Some of the chiropractic patients had serum thiol levels higher than what is associated with normal wellness.

 

Chiropractor Dr. Christopher Kent explained: “Oxidative stress, metabolically generating free radicals, is now a broadly accepted theory of how we age and develop disease.”

 

“Going through life,” he adds, “we experience physical, chemical and emotional stress. These stresses affect the function of the nervous system. We hypothesized that these disturbances in nerve function could affect oxidative stress and DNA repair on a cellular level.”

“Chiropractic care appears to improve the ability of the body to adapt to stress,” concluded Kent.

(NaturalNews) As springtime heads into summer, our thoughts often turn to fun in the sun. Sometimes though, we overdo it and end up with a painful sunburn. While some daily sunshine is extremely healthy, the best idea is to avoid too much sun exposure at one time. When you do get too much sun, promptly take steps to help relieve the pain and heal your skin.

YOGURT: One common remedy for sunburn is yogurt. Smear yogurt on your skin as soon as it turns pink to help cool the skin, reestablish pH balance and promote faster healing. It is best to use plain unsweetened full-fat yogurt that contains few additives. Let it sit on your skin until it warms up and then rinse it off with tepid water. Apply as often as needed. Better still, use a paste made of barley, turmeric and yogurt in equal proportions. Apply it over the affected areas for sunburn relief and healing.

TEA: Another common item that can be used for sunburns is tea. Make a large pot of very strong tea, use a towel to soak up all the tea and then apply to the sunburn area. Alternately, use a large number of teabags and make a bathtub full of tea; soak in the bath when the temperature is tepid to barely warm. The tannins in tea help draw out the burn and heal the skin. You can also apply cold, used tea bags to sun-burned eyelids to relieve pain and swelling.

ALOE VERA: When it comes to burns, one should never be without Aloe Vera gel, which is also wonderful for minor scrapes and cuts and an all around wonderful substance for the skin. One superior good remedy for sunburn is to combine aloe Vera, vitamin E oil, and cucumbers. Liquefy cucumbers in a blender and mix with aloe vera gel, and vitamin e oil.

POTATO PEELS: An age old remedy for sunburns mentioned in ancient texts is potato peels – and it appears to have science on its side. Doctors have found that in case of minor burns, potato peel bandages work better than conventional dressing. Potato peels provide moisture and they also have anti-bacterial properties that help in healing.

LAVENDER: Another superior sunburn remedy is lavender. Lavender essential oil not only relieves sunburn, but it also prevents peeling and may enable you to keep your tan.

homemade sunburn spray can be made as follows:

Ingredients:

2 fluid ounces of distilled water
9 drops of lavender oil
2 drops of peppermint oil
1 drop of spearmint oil

Directions:

Mix all, and spritz lightly over sunburned skin.

 

Note: Avoid using any products which contain lanolin immediately after a sunburn. Lanolin can actually make the burn feel worse once it is warmed by the body’s temperature. Many aloe products contain lanolin.

Six Risky Chemicals You’re Carrying in Your Body

 

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released its latest assessment of the chemicals people are carrying around in their bodies.

 

The biomonitoring study is the most comprehensive in the world, measuring 212 chemicals in the blood and urine of 8,000 Americans.

 

The CDC highlighted a few chemicals because they are both widespread — found in all or most people tested — and potentially harmful.

Here’s a look at what they are and how you can try to avoid them:

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers

Better known as “flame retardants”, PBDEs are used widely in all sorts of goods to reduce fire risk. They also accumulate in human fat, and some studies suggest they may harm your liver and kidneys as well as your neurological system. Some states have restricted the use of certain PBDEs, but short of such bans, avoiding them is difficult because the chemicals are integrated into so many products.

Bisphenol A

BPA, which is found in many plastics, in the lining of cans, and even coating many sales receipts, was found in more than 90 percent of Americans tested. The health concerns about BPA are many and growing. While BPA-free products are available, it can be difficult to find them unless you do research ahead of time.

PFOA

PFOA and other perfluorinated chemicals are used to create heat-resistant and non-stick coatings on cookware, as well as grease-resistant food packaging and stain-resistant clothing. Studies have linked these chemicals to a range of health problems, including infertility in women, and to developmental and reproductive problems in lab animals. Avoiding products that contain them is a first step towards avoiding them.

 

Acrylamide

Formed when carbohydrates are cooked at high temperatures, acrylamide and its metabolites are extremely common in Americans. High-level exposure has caused cancer and neurological problems in lab animals and workers, respectively. Avoiding it in food comes down to food choice, storage and preparation.

Mercury

The main source of mercury — a potent neurotoxin that can lead to permanent brain damage if young children or fetuses are exposed — continues to be contaminated fish. I do not recommend eating most fish for this reason.

MTBE

This gasoline additive has been phased out of use in the U.S. in favor of ethanol, but it still can be detected widely in American’s bodies; it has contaminated many drinking water supplies. Studies have linked it to a variety of potential problems, including neurological and reproductive damage.

You have 1 Brain.

You have 1 Spinal Cord.

You have 31 pairs of nerves.

You have 75,000,000,000,000 cells.

How many cells are controlled by each nerve pair?

 

75,000,000,000,000 / 31

Each nerve pair’s responsible for controlling ~ 2,400,000,000,000 (2.4 trillion) Functions.

 

When you are subluxated, each area you are “out” you are shutting off and damaging roughly 2.4 trillion cell functions. What is scary, you cannot feel subluxation or the cells dysfunction. That is why you never want too miss an adjustment, why everyone needs to be checked for subluxation and why you want to get adjusted for the rest of your life.

Are you listening?

Communication 101: Lesson 1

Last night my fever was 102 ……    I keep coughing …. My back is sore ……
….. I have high blood pressure ….  I have tightness in my shoulders….

I have a headache….  My body aches all over…….. I feel my energy is down …

How is your relationship with your body?

24 hours a day 7 days a week every year after year your body is communicating with you. How’s that going?

 

Are you listening? Are you paying attention? Do you know how to interpret your body’s messages and communication and how to respond constructively?

Remember, everything happens for a reason.

Why do babies cry? – They are tired, hungry, cold, hot, uncomfortable, sick, dirty diaper, etc…? Would it make sense turn off the monitor, or close the door or stick a pacifier in their mouth – is this the solution? Of course NOT!

What is the purpose?

FEVER:     raises your body’s core temperature to kill of bacteria, virus and

infection.

CAUGH:   your lungs method of removing virus, bacteria, toxins and invaders from your body.

MUCOUS:   your Immune system surrounding the “bad guys” for safe

removal.

RUNNY NOSE:   your body removing the bad guys from your body

SKIN RASH:   your body excreting a virus, fungus, bacteria, toxin from the

inside to the outside.

SWELLING:  your joints protecting the area and warning you to STOP

abusing me and providing nutrients to the area

VOMIT:   your intestines vehemently removing bacteria, virus, toxins before

harming your body

TUMOR:   your immune system sequestering the mutated cells and preventing them from spreading through your body

I could go on and on and on listing different symptoms… the Point: Everything happens for a reason and your body knows best. Learn to listen to the God given wisdom INSIDE your body – your body wants you healthy and well more than you know.

The Point:

ListenDon’t interfere (drugs & surgery). Healing can only come from INSIDE your body. It’s the LAW. Your body HEALS ITSELF – there is NO OTHER WAY.

The “symptoms” you experience are the COMMUNICATION of your body – Your body trying to heal itself (symptoms are part of the solution); Start building a better relationship with your body. It wont give up on you, please don’t give up on your body.

FDA Warns of Zocor Risk to Muscles

Muscle Injury Risk With Higher Zocor Doses, Certain Other Drugs

March 19, 2010 — Based on new data, the FDA today warned that higher doses of the cholesterol-lowering drug Zocor, sold generically as simvastatin, carry an increased risk of muscle injury.

Muscle example: Heart – it injures your heart!

The FDA also warns that mixing Zocor with certain other drugs also increases patients’ risk of muscle injury, including the rare but serious complication known asrhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis can sometimes result in fatal kidney damage.

The combination products Vytorin and Simcor also contain simvastatin, the active ingredient in Zocor. Zocor is a member of the class of drugs known as statins. All statin drugs carry a risk of muscle damage, but new data suggest that this risk may be particularly high for the 80 milligram dose of Zocor.

The data come from the SEARCH study, in which muscle damage was seen in nearly 1% of patients taking the 80 milligram dose of Zocor but in only 0.02% of patients taking the 20 milligram dose of Zocor.

Rhabdomyolysis was rare in the SEARCH study. It happened in only 11 of 6,031 patients (0.02%) in group taking the 80milligram dose of Zocor, but was not seen in patients taking the 20 milligram dose.

A different study found that muscle damage was more common in patients taking Zocor doses of more than 20 milligrams a day who also took the heart rhythm drugamiodarone (brand names CordaronePacerone). Patients taking another drug,verapamil(brand names Calan, Covera, Isoptin, Verelan), also should not take Zocor at doses higher than 20 milligrams .

And patients taking the angina/blood pressure drug diltiazem (brand namesCardizem, Cartia, Dilacor, Diltia, and Tiazac) were also at higher risk of muscle injury if they also took Zocor at doses higher than 40 milligrams a day.

New data also suggest that people of Chinese descent should not take Zocor at the 80 milligram dose — and should be careful even when taking lower doses — if they also take niacin-containing products.

You should never take Zocor at any dose if you are taking:

· Itraconazole, Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, Clarithromycin, Telithromycin, HIV protease inhibitors, Nefazodone

You should never take more than the 10 milligram dose of Zocor if you are taking:

· Gemfibrozil, Cyclosporine, Danazol
